"Hears these words... and **does** them."
The Foolish Builder
"Hears these words... and **does not** do them."
The Text
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.
25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.
26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
Exegetical Deep Dive
Immediate Context
This parable is the climax of a series of warnings that conclude the Sermon on the Mount. It directly follows the warning about the two ways (7:13-14, "narrow gate...wide gate"), the warning against false prophets (7:15-20, "by their fruits you will know them"), and the crucial warning against false profession (7:21-23, "Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’... but the one who *does* the will of my Father"). This parable, therefore, serves as the final illustration of the profound difference between merely *saying* "Lord, Lord" and *doing* the will of the Father.
Wider & Historical Context
As the conclusion to the entire Sermon (Matt 5–7), "these words of mine" (τοὺς λόγους μου τούτους) refers to all the teachings Jesus has just delivered. The imagery was immediately potent for a 1st-century Palestinian audience. The region experiences a long dry season followed by torrential winter rains. A dry riverbed (*wadi*) would appear to be a perfect, flat, and easy place to build. However, it was common knowledge that these *wadis* would become raging, destructive torrents when the rains came. The "foolish" man chose the easy path, while the "wise" man undertook the difficult, costly labor of hewing a foundation out of the solid bedrock.
